Abstract

Background: Breast is best for baby. Under any circumstances, breast milk is the ideal food for the infant. No other food is required for the baby until 4–5 months after birth under normal conditions. Indian mothers secrete 450–600 ml milk daily with 1.1 g protein per 100 ml. The energy value of human milk is 70 Kcal per 100 ml. As mother s milk is the complete food of the baby, if it is not given in adequate content, then it can affect baby’s growth and development, and also it may lead to malnutrition. So, breastfeeding deserves encouragement from all concerned in the welfare of children. Material and method: The researcher has adopted a descriptive study design with evaluative approach for this research study. A simple random sampling technique was used for selecting 50 nursing interns and the study was conducted in GNM classroom, College of Nursing, Loni (Bk). Results: The knowledge mean score of male nursing interns was 9.1 ± 9.44 as compared to mean score of female interns, i.e. 8.97 ± 9.18. Practices mean score of male nursing interns was 6.63 ± 6.81 as compared to mean score of female interns, i.e. 6.77 ± 6.87. The knowledge mean score of teaching program attended nursing interns was 10.72 ± 11.22 as compared to mean score of teaching program not attended nursing interns, i.e. 8.51 ± 8.71. Practices mean score of teaching program attended nursing interns was 7.09 ± 7.30 as compared to mean score of teaching program not attended nursing interns, i.e. 6.48 ± 6.72. The knowledge mean score of duration of internship >4 weeks nursing interns was 9.08 ± 10.21 as compared to mean score of duration of internship <4 weeks nursing interns, i.e. 8.08 ± 8.44. Practices mean score of internship >4 weeks nursing interns was 7.27 ± 7.40 as compared to mean score of internship <4 weeks nursing interns, i.e. 6.12 ± 6.24. The knowledge mean score of unmarried nursing interns was 9.43 ± 9.15 as compared to mean score of married nursing interns, i.e. 8.95 ± 9.26. Practices mean score of married nursing interns was 6.81 ± 6.93 as compared to mean score of unmarried nursing interns, i.e. 6.46 ± 6.59. Conclusion: In this study, I have seen that nursing interns having better skill in latching practices but poor in knowledge. In this study, males have more knowledge about latching practices but female interns have better skill to follow latching practices. So, I conclude that during training clinical practice, they need to gain more knowledge and expose to clinical areas for practicing latching practices skillfully.
