Antibacterial Surface

Abstract

Surface modification of different materials to provide antibacterial properties are getting great attention in the last few decades. Formation of biofilm is one of the major reason of bacterial infections of various biomaterials. Surface coating and functionalization can prevent formation of biofilm for different applications. Formation of biofilm is a complicated process which involves several phenomena occurring over a period of time. Bacterial adhesion is the first step in the formation of biofilm. It is then followed by the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances which promotes the attachment of more bacteria on the surface. This is followed by the growth and colonisation of the bacteria thus resulting in biofouling of surface. Plasma treatment has been employed as a useful tool for the modification of polymeric materials to prevent formation of biofilm. The bacterial adhesion gets reduced due to incorporation of various antibacterial functional groups after plasma treatment.
