Study of the energy utilisation characteristics of solid state hydrogen storage and recovery systems

  1. Rupsha Bhattacharyya

Abstract

The energy usage patterns during solid state hydrogen storage and retrieval on commercially available hydride forming alloys have been examined in this work through thermodynamic model based calculations, considering the entire storage and recovery system. It is calculated that energy (mechanical and thermal) equivalent to about 16 to 30% of the stored hydrogen energy is involved in the hydriding step, while 9 to 40% of the stored hydrogen energy equivalent is consumed during the dehydriding step. These are optimistic estimates based on mainly thermodynamic considerations and assumed storage vessel design data. The round trip energy utilization may be improved by making use of the energy released during hydriding and using it for dehydriding, for which a parallel hydriding-dehydriding operation in a two-vessel system may be envisaged.
