Abstract

In the present research, aluminum alloy (LM13) Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) is prepared by stir casting technique and is reinforced with ZrO2 particulates in the weight percent ranging from 3 wt.% to 12 wt.% in the steps of 3 wt.%. The reinforcement i.e., ZrO2 particle size added varies between 100–200 nm. The resulting CNMMCs are solidified under the influence of copper chill of 25 mm thickness to study the effect of chilling on microstructure and mechanical properties of CNMMCs. Ingots were cast employing the end chill is to study Volumetric Heat Capacity (VHC) of the chill on properties of chilled MMC developed. Microstructure examination reveals good distribution of ZrO2 particles throughout the matrix along with a good bonding, structural integrity, and fine-grained structure without any cluster formation. It is evident from results that Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and hardness of chilled MMCs depends on the percent of reinforcement addition, volumetric heat capacity of the chill used and the location of the specimen selected from the cast block. Results exhibits that the influence of addition of reinforcement and volumetric heat capacity of chill (effect of chilling) enhances the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of Al alloy (LM13) chilled metal matrix composite developed.
