Abstract

In the present research, aluminum alloy (LM13) Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) is prepared by stir casting technique and is reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC) particulates in the weight percent ranging from 3 wt.% to 15 wt.% in the steps of 3 wt.%. The dispersoid i.e. TiC particle size added varies between 100–200 µm. The resulting MMCs were solidified under the influence of copper chill of 25 mm thickness to study the effect of chilling on microstructure, mechanical properties (hardness) and tribological behavior of chilled TiC reinforced MMCs. Ingots were cast employing the end chill is to study Volumetric Heat Capacity (VHC) of the chill on properties of chilled MMC developed. Results exhibits that the influence of addition of reinforcement and volumetric heat capacity of chill (effect of chilling) results in fine grained structure that enhances the mechanical properties and tribological behavior of Al alloy (LM13) chilled metal matrix composite developed. Incorporation of low-density TiCparticles as the reinforcement increases the hardness with increase in wear resistance.
