Abstract

The interest for renewable energy sources are increasing day by day due to the limited availability of fossil fuel. Among all the renewable energy sources solar energy is growing interest due to its easy availability almost among all area of earth where people lives. Solar energy can be used as a source of energy by two ways: Solar Photovoltaic Cell and Solar thermal. Photovoltaic cells are the easiest way for generating electricity from solar energy. Cadmium Sulfide, a II-VI group compound semiconductor, widely used for the application in photovoltaic and optoelectronics. It is used as window layer in heterojunction solar cells having a direct bandgap nearly of 2.42 eV at room temperature. Undoped CdS film always grown as n-type conductivity due to the native donors and sulphur vacancies. CdS is deposited on glass substrates by chemical process, which is a very simple, requires less time and economical. In this work equi-molar cadmium acetate ((CH3COO)2Cd.2H20) and thiourea (CH4N2S) solution is prepared using methanol as solvent and they are mixed, stirred and then deposited on glass substrates having two different substrate temperatures. After the deposition these samples are annealed at 4500C for 15 minutes with the help of digital furnace. Here cadmium acetate is the source for cadmium and thiourea is for sulphur. The structural characteristics has been done using XRD, optical characteristics (transmittance and band gap) have been done with the help of UV- Vis Spectrophotometer and the conductive properties (resistivity, conductivity, carrier mobility) have been determined by Hall measurement. Results confirm that CdS is a good choice for window layer in solar photovoltaic applications. Keywords: Chemical process, substrate temperature, band gap, carrier mobility
