Structural Analysis of a Single Tool Post

  1. Andrew Baby Alex

Abstract

This paper provides practical simulation analysis of a Single Tool Post using the Fusion 360 graphic program. A Single Tool Post has a predominantly cylindrical body joined with a collar at the base. A slot is present in the body to hold the tool for further operations. The tool is placed on top of the hemispherical wedge in the slot. The tool is tightly placed in the slot with the help of a square headed screw inserted through the threaded portion of the cylindrical part of the body. The tool post is used in many machining operations especially on the lathe machine. Although most tool posts are static, many rotary posts are available for cutting spherical shapes. The slots in the single tool post typically employ a dovetail profile for proper and tight fit. These tool posts are placed on the compound rest of the lathe machine with a mechanism for easy removal of tool in case of emergency. Normally while machining, the tool post is kept stationary and the compound rest, cross slide allows movement of tool post for any sort of operation (fine adjustment etc.). There are different kinds of tool posts for various other operations like Square Tool post. It facilitates the clamping of 4 tools at the same time. Each tool can be accessed using an indexing operation by rotating tool holder on the base plate of the Square Tool Post. However, in this paper we will be focusing on the basic form on tool post, that is, Single Tool Post.
