Abstract

Solar PV systems are increasingly present in the electrical distribution systems due to the government’s incentives and low production cost of a developed PV technology. Power electronic converters play a major role in the integration of PV system with utility grid for high power generation. Extensive use of these devices leads to power quality problems such as sag, swell, harmonics, reactive power generation. Among these power quality issues harmonics are most considerable one. This paper analysis the effect of harmonics in grid connected PV system with various irradiance levels. This harmonics are eliminated by using Shunt active filter with Voltage Source Inverter topology connected to grid connected PV system. The filter designed with p-q theory is used for extracting the harmonic current. Also a Fuzzy logic controller algorithm is developed to control the shunt active power filter to compensate harmonics produced by grid connected PV system to improve power quality. A PI controller is developed to maintain a constant DC voltage across the Capacitor of DC bus side of the inverter. The simulation is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The proposed Shunt active filter can suppress harmonics generated by the non-linear load and it can maintain the THD value within the standard limit.
