Abstract

An experimental study to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of intradialyticstretching exercises on dialysis efficacy among patients undergoing haemodialysiswas done in selected hospital of Delhi by Ms. Anshu Kain in partial fulfillment of therequirements for the Degree of Master of Nursing at Nightingale Institute of Nursing,Chaudhary Charan Singh University of Meerut during the year 2015-2016.This study was undertaken with the objectives to: (i)To assess and evaluatethe dialysis efficacy among patients undergoing haemodialysis before and afteradministration of intradialytic stretching exercise in experimental group. (ii)To assessand evaluate the pre and post dialysis efficacy among patients undergoinghaemodialysis in control group. (iii)To evaluate the effectiveness of Intra-dialyticstretching exercise among patients undergoing haemodialysis. (iv) To find out theassociation between the post dialysis efficacy of experimental group with the selecteddemographic variable. The study was conducted at B.L. Kapoor Hospital, New Delhi. Purposivesampling technique was done to obtain adequate samples. The samples comprised of30 experimental group samples and 30 control group samples undergoinghaemodialysis. The conceptual framework of the study is based on Health PromotionModel proposed by Nola J. Pender in 1992. Quantitative Research Approach wasadopted for the study with quasi experimental pretest posttest control group design. The tool used for the data collection was structured interview schedule forsample characteristics and 4 parametric observation schedules for assessment ofdialysis efficacy. Content validity of the tool was done by 9 experts from the field ofMedicine and Nursing. The data was collected from 12 th February 2016 to 29 th February 2016. Subjectswere asked to do regular exercises in first two hours of haemodialysis session for 6alternative days. The obtained data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statisticsin terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Mean difference, Standard Deviation, tvalue and Chi-square.Major findings of the study are Majority of the samples were in the age groupof 51 and above years that is 40% in experimental group whereas in the control grouppatients with age 51 and above are 43%. Mean post dialysis efficacy score was higherthan the mean pre dialysis efficacy score in experimental group. To obtain thedifference between experimental and control group pre and post dialysis efficacyscore was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that implementation of intradialyticstretching exercise were effective for experimental group in increasing dialysisefficacy in haemodialysis patients. Majority of patients felt relaxed and anintradialytic stretching exercise used by the researcher was accepted, intradialyticstretching exercises are non-invasive, non- pharmacological and effectives meanwhich can be used for haemodialysis patients as a routine practice. Based on theresearch findings further recommendations also given. The study also has discussed the implications in the field of Nursing Education,Nursing Research, Nursing Practice, Nursing Administration. Based on the studyfindings recommendations were proposed for future research.
