Abstract

Background: Pneumonia is another most mutual nosocomial poison in critically ill patients in the United States and is related with high humanity and morbidity. 86% of nosocomial pneumonias are connected with motorized ventilation and are named ventilators associated pneumonia. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of nursing care bundle on prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) among mechanically ventilated patients. Design: Quasi experimental design where nonequivalent control group design was adopted for the study. Setting: Erode Emergency Care Hospital, Erode and Erode Trust Hospital, Erode. Participants: 24 mechanically ventilated patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by simple random sampling. Methods: A pre-test was conducted by using Clinical Pulmonary Infection (CPIS) Score and Modified Mass Wisconsin Physical Comfort Scale. Immediately after pre-test Nursing Care bundle (position changes, hand wash, nebulisation, closed suction and chlorhexidine gluconate mouth care) was given for 10 days in experimental group and again post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Collected data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: In posttest the overall mean percentage in prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia in control group was 41% and experimental group was 24%. It reveals a difference of 17%. It depicts that nursing care bundle is effective on prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia among mechanically ventilated patients. Unpaired ‘t’ value of 3.16 and 4.25. This showed that the nursing care bundle was more effective in prevention of Ventilator associated pneumonia among mechanically ventilated patients. There was a statistically no significant association found between the post test scores of the sample with their demographic variables. Conclusion: The findings imply the need for educating nurses for effective prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
