Abstract

In present scenario the problem of clean potable water is very crucial. Due to adverse weathercondition the potable water is not available in the required quantity. The available water is brackishand to convert that in to fresh water is the main requirement in present scenario. As per the report byWHO and UNICEF the improved quality of water is used by 91% world population. Due to rapidindustrialization and urbanization the requirement of the clean potable water has increased. Thesurface of the earth is covered by the water is about 2/3 of the total surface. Out of the total availablewater 97% is salty and only 2% is fresh water available in form of glacial. Less than 1% fresh water isin human reach and utilizes the same for drinking purpose. By seeing this condition it is very clearthat by 2050 the potable water will be scare and it will create a great crisis. Thee requirement of thefresh potable water is very much important for good health. Excessive use of water in Agriculture andIndustry is the prime cause of water shortage for drinking purpose. The objective of this paper is to describe the basics of the solar still and the different types with theirdesign. This paper will try to describe about the different environmental factors which affect the2productivity of the solar still .In this paper few techniques are also discussed with which we canincrease the productivity of the solar still. Both the sectors are deteriorating the quality and availability of the good water. There are severaldesigns of the solar stills which are used for the purpose to increase the productivity of the Solar still. The conventional designs are Single slope and double slope solar still. To get the fresh water ateconomical price is another big advantage of the solar still. The aim of this paper is to give the basic understanding of different design and parameters which areresponsible for the yield of the solar still.
