Abstract

In this work, clay soil is stabilized using a biocompatible chitosan solution derived from shrimp shell waste. The biopolymer chitosan has attracted attention in the field of geoenvironmental studies because of its possible applications in the absorption of heavy metals, the mitigation of soil erosion, and the improvement of hydraulic conductivity. However, a thorough investigation into its impact on the mechanical properties of soil has not yet been conducted. A portion of the research involves applying chitosan at different concentrations to assess how it influences the mechanical properties of clay soil under different curing conditions and times. The study suggests that by increasing interparticle interactions, chitosan might be added to soil to improve its mechanical properties. However, time and moisture content play a significant role in its development. In particular, chitosan first increases particle interaction when circumstances are wet, improving mechanical qualities. However, over time, its efficacy decreases.
