Abstract

Bioreactors are used to treat industrial wastewater including petrochemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, oil, dairy wastes, etc. Disposal of dairy wastes is of importance through the manufacture of milk products including cheese, butter, ice cream and processed milk. Most of the dairy industries use typical activated sludge method for their effluent treatment leading to a relatively high operation costs and problem with the disposal of large amounts of sludge. Aerobic processes are effective for organic carbon removal in domestic and industrial wastewater. In present study, numbers of experiments have been performed to treat synthetic dairy waste using an aerobic bioreactor. The following parameters like chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH has been studied with enhanced hydraulic retention time (HRT). The effects of coagulant (ferric chloride) on dairy waste have been performed. Results of present work are well in acceptable range to give optimum condition to treat waste using continuous and batch operation. It was observed that in continuous operation, 70% COD removal achieved in 188 h while in batch reactor, 81.63% COD removal achieved in 118 h.
