Investigation on Trans-esterification of Terephthalic Acid and Ethylene Glycol for the Production of Polyester Fibers.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThere have been considerable efforts to produce renewable polymers from biomass. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in fibers for clothing, containers for liiquids and foods, thermoforming for manufacturing ,etc. The monomer bis(2-hydrooxyethyl) terephthalate can be synthesized by the esterification reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol with water as a byproduct, or by transesterification reaction between glycol and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with methanol as a by-product (done immediately after esterification/ transesterification) with water as a byproduct. This work is made to investigate how this process is carried out in the production of polyester fibers. Polyethylene terephthalates having high quality, particularly an improved color tone is produced either by the reaction of dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol or by a direct transesterification of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. Though the later has some advantages but needs an extra step for esterifying terephthalic acid and has not been fully satisfactory from the points of apparatus and operation efficiency.Key words: Investigation, trans-esterification, terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, production, polyester fibers.
