Abstract

Building information modeling (BIM) is a unified practice using coordinated and coherent representation software proficiently running in various formats (from 3D to 7D) to perk up overall project management. BIM can be executed ahead of the planning and designing stage of project, covering the complete building life cycle, along with the procedures involved in facility management and sustainability. This paper critically reviews the application of 6D and 7D BIM in construction industry. It also analyzes the tools which can be effectively used to integrate the 3D model of building with facility management and sustainability. This study aims at exploring the project management issues related with maintenance, operations and sustainable design, which can be overcome by using 6D and 7D BIM. Challenges in sustainable design using BIM are also discussed.
